Happy Summer! It’s been gorgeous out lately, perfect for grilling, bonfires, swimming at the lake, ice cream treats, and eating al fresca. There really is nothing like summer in Minnesota. (But bring the bug spray of course!) Looking for things to do around town this weekend? Here are some fun links!
This week is Twin Cities Pride here in Minneapolis, which is a celebration the LGBTQ community and raising awareness of issues. This year’s event will be especially profound after the supreme court’s ruling earlier today! Previous events this week included fun runs, a Lily Tomlin show, picnics, with more to come this weekend including the Pride festival and concerts on Saturday and Sunday, and the annual Pride Parade on Sunday. Whether you are part of the LGBT community or an ally, it should be a great time! Free metro passes to the event are available here.
The Annual Honky-Tonk Fest is returning to Grumpy’s NE on Saturday! The line up is truly great (bands like The Cactus Blossoms!) and it’s for a good cause. If you feel like kicking back and listening to some great country tunes, don’t be a stranger! 2-9pm on Saturday, $10
Each weekend in the summer, the Heart of the Beast presents Saturday Puppet Shows for Kids at Calhoun Square. These family-friendly puppet shows are free and include a workshop and fun activities each week. Tomorrow’s show is “The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly”. This event is Free! Shows are on the first floor of Calhoun Square at 10am and 11:30am, every Saturday through July 25th.
It’s the time of year when the Minnesota Orchestra brings special outdoor concerts to the public. Check out this years series, “Symphony for the Cities” at the Lake Harriet Bandshell! Featuring crowd favorite selections from classical to symphony pop, this should make for a lovely evening. Free! June 29th, July 1st, 2nd, and 6th in the evenings.
Can’t get enough of the deliciousness from all of the food trucks roaming around town? Be sure to check out one of the Food Truck Fairs this summer! Basically, it’s a large gathering of food trucks – instead of tracking down your favorites, they make it easy by being in one place! The next one is Sunday at Uptown and will feature 60 food trucks, plus live music. 11am-9pm on Hennepin to 31st ave-31st and Holmes. $2 to enter.
Wow, congratulations to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts on celebrating its 100th Birthday! It sounds like they are throwing the bash of the season. Hope you already have tickets–or friends in high places–to the Summer Party on Friday, as it is sold out! Or check out the special Black-Tie Gala Dinner on Saturday – there may still be tables available. In any case, be sure to visit the MIA soon to take part in honoring this wonderful museum! Friday and Saturday night.
Twins games can be a big outing by themselves, but it’s always great to keep the fun going! Do you have any traditions before or after catching a game? What do you think of these ideas?
