The University neighborhood is part of the larger University area of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is mostly comprised of the University of Minnesota. The neighborhood is bordered by University Avenue, 15th Avenue and the 8th Street Railroad tracks to the north; Oak Street SE to the east, the Mississippi River and 4th Street to the south; 19th Avenue, 1st Street, and 11th Avenue to the west. The University neighborhood is mostly east of the Mississippi River, with a small area of the university located on the West Bank. The campus is a walkable campus, and the easiest way to access the West Bank is by a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Mississippi River.

The University neighborhood is made up of the University of Minnesota Campus, so the neighborhood is comprised of University buildings, schools, and facilities. The sports facilities are located on the northeast of the neighborhood, with the main campus and dorms in the middle of the neighborhood, with more colleges, performing arts buildings, and other University facilities on the West Bank. The campus is a pedestrian-friendly campus, and many students get around via walking, biking, or the busses that run throughout campus and back and forth between the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses. Busses are also a convenient way for students to travel to downtown Minneapolis, or other destinations in the Twin Cities. Students can also easily walk to the Marcy Holmes or Prospect Park neighborhood, both which have many college-friendly residences for students and non-students alike, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and music venues. The area dubbed as “Dinkytown”, is a popular destination just northwest of the campus, and provides a variety of popular businesses, shops, cafés, restaurants, boutiques, bars, and music venues.

Due to the University of Minnesota, most of the area is not typical residential, however, the neighborhood is within the Minneapolis School District. Schools serving the area include Pratt Community School (Pre-K-5), Anne Sullivan Community school (Pre-K-8), Sanford Middle School (6-8), and South High School. Other nearby educational options include public charter and magnet schools as well as private schools.
This area is conveniently located just east of downtown Minneapolis, so residents and students can easily travel to downtown and other areas of Minneapolis. University residents commute by car, walking, biking, or public transportation. There are several Nice Ride bicycle rental stations located in University providing an additional transportation option for residents who want to commute by bicycle. The Green Line light rail also runs down University Avenue, making it convenient to travel back and forth between Minneapolis and St. Paul, and to other destinations in the Twin Cities.
