The Howe neighborhood is located in the Longfellow area of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is southeast of downtown Minneapolis, and its borders include 34th Street E to the north, the Mississippi River to the east, 40th Street E to the south, and Hiawatha Avenue to the west. Due to its close proximity to both the Mississippi River and light rail, residents have a variety of options for recreation, including walking and cycling trails to explore the river, or taking the train to downtown Minneapolis or to the Mall of America for shopping and entertainment.

The Howe neighborhood is located within walking distance to the Mississippi River, parks, restaurants, shops, cafés, schools, a community garden and movie theaters. The Mississippi River makes up the eastern border of the neighborhood, and offers walking and cycling trails that extend throughout Minneapolis as part of the Ground Rounds byways. The Mississippi Gorge Regional Park off of 36th Street is a green space that has prairie land and natural grasses. This is a good spot for fishing, hiking, picnicking, and otherwise exploring the Mississippi River area. The Longfellow Park is another destination for residents, offering basketball half courts and tennis courts, a football field, ice and ice hockey rinks, a playground and wading pool, walking paths, picnicking areas and a recreation center. The recreation offers a variety of year-round programming for all ages, along with many amenities including rentable meeting rooms, a craft room with kilns, an indoor gymnasium with a basketball and volleyball courts, a kitchen and a public computer lab. Next to Dowling Elementary school is the Dowling Community Garden, which was originally developed as a Victory Garden in 1943. Now it is a community garden with 175 plots and over 200 gardeners and run by volunteers, and offers a variety of resources for urban gardeners. While much of the neighborhood is residential, there are several local businesses including coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, and other services running along Minnehaha and 42nd Avenues. One popular attraction in Howe is the Riverview Theater, which is a historic 1950’s style single-screen theater that features current features as well as occasional special screenings and other events.

The Howe neighborhood resides within the Minneapolis Public School District. Two of the main public schools reside in the Howe neighborhood: the Hiawatha Community School – Howe Campus (3-5), and Sanford Middle School (6-8). Additionally, the Dowling Urban Environmental School (K-5), a public magnet school also is located in the Howe neighborhood. The main public high school serving the area is South High School. Howe residents can also choose among a variety of nearby public charter, magnet and private schools.
The Howe neighborhood is adjacent to Hiawatha Avenue/Highway 55, which is the easiest way to access the neighborhood. Residents can commute to downtown and other parts of the metro area by car, bike, or public transportation. Busses run frequently through the neighborhood and the light rail runs down Hiawatha, making it easy for residents who wish to travel downtown, or to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America by public transportation.
