Residents know that some of the best view for July 4th fireworks over the Mississippi River are at Mill City Museum and the Guthrie if you can reserve a spot, along with Gold Medal Park. Adjacent to the neighborhood is the MacPhail Center for Music, which is a lovely facility that provides lessons and classes for student musicians of all ages, and provides practice rooms and performance spaces for concerts and recitals. Both the Guthrie Theater and the MacPhail Center for Music were designed by renowned architects, and worth a visit. Mill City Museum is on the site of the ruins of the Gold Medal flour mill, and is a family-friendly museum that tells the history of Minneapolis and the flour industry, made possible by the access to the Mississippi River. Both Mill City Museum and the Guthrie theater have observation decks overlooking the Mississippi River, providing great views of the area. Mill Ruins Park is adjacent to the Mississippi River, and has walking and cycling paths along the river, and kiosks and signs with information about the old Gold Medal Mill. This is a great area to explore, as there is access to the Stone Arch bridge, which allows people to wander to the other side of the river to St. Anthony Main along the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail. Gold Medal Park is next to the Guthrie, and has a mound with a spiral walk way, providing a nice green space for people to wander and check out the views of the river.

There are no schools within Downtown East, however, there are several public, public charter, magnet and community schools, as well as private schools near Downtown East real estate, providing a variety of educational opportunities to Downtown East residents. Downtown East can be accessed by I-35W and I-94. Its central location makes it easy for residents to commute quickly via car, bike, or public transportation.
