This week we are featuring White Bear Lake, a Northeast suburb located 12 miles from Downtown St. Paul and 20 miles from Downtown Minneapolis. The city of White Bear Lake is named after one of the largest lakes in the metro, which provides the community with year-round outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming in the summer, and ice fishing in the winter. Several parks in White Bear Lake offer playgrounds, sport courts and fields, picnic shelters and other outdoor amenities. Trails around White Bear Lake are abundant, perfect for running, biking and hiking as well as snowshoeing and cross country skiing. One favorite spot is the Tamarack Nature Center, which offers a variety of trails and activities for all ages, as well as day camps and early childhood education for kids. Other attractions in White Bear Lake include a weekly Farmer’s Market throughout the summer and fall, the White Bear Center for the Arts with classes as well as exhibitions, the White Bear Lake Sports Center, and a downtown area with boutiques, cafes, shops and restaurants.
White Bear Lake has around 25,000 people and hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. Currently, the lake is the site of the Art Shanty Projects, which is a festival featuring artist-designed ice fishing houses. Visitors can check out the On-Ice Program to see the shanties and take part in events and see performances, each weekend throughout February. Manitou Days is another major festival that takes place in White Bear Lake every summer, with over 70 events for all-ages. This festival spans three weeks, from mid-June through July 4th, starting with Marketfest—a weekly family festival with food, merchandise, art and live music—and ending with Independence Day celebrations.
