Today our City Pick of the week is Wayzata! Wayzata is located west of Minneapolis and St. Paul, next to Lake Minnetonka. Citizens of Wayzata live near the beautiful Lake Minnetonka, and love to explore parks and trails surrounding the lake, as well as enjoy outdoor sports and recreational activities throughout the year. Additionally, you can take a tour on the Steamboat Minnehaha, visit restaurants and cafés with lakefront views, or visit Wayzata’s downtown area with several shopping boutiques.
Wayzata citizens celebrate several events throughout the year, including the “Boo Blast” Halloween party, the February “Chilly Open” golf tournament literally on the frozen Lake Minnetonka, and most notably, “James J. Hill Days“, a large 3-day community festival. Known as “The Empire Builder”, James J. Hill was a railroad executive who built railroads across the midwest, particularly the Great Northern Railway which ran from St. Paul, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington. In 1883, the small town of Wayzata sued the railroad for building tracks which cut off the town from Lake Minnetonka. Hill moved the depot a mile from town to spite the complaining citizens, and finally ended the feud 15 years later by building a nice depot in town and coming personally to the dedication. To celebrate the community and commemorate James J. Hill’s legacy, the people of Wayzata throw a large family-friendly yearly event with a street market, parade, carnival, bike ride, street dance, youth fishing championship, waterski show, fireworks and more. This year, the event will take place next weekend, on September 11th-13th. See more James J. Hill Days events here!
While it’s close to Minneapolis and St. Paul, Wayzata maintains a small town feel with its downtown business area, abundance of parks, trails, and recreational facilities, community events and lakeside restaurants and coffee shops.
