This week we are excited to take a look at Tonka Bay, one of the western suburbs. Just 20 miles from downtown Minneapolis, and 30 miles from downtown St. Paul, Tonka Bay is located on the land between Lake Minnetonka’s upper and lower lakes. Over half of Tonka Bay’s homes are on the lake, which lends a year-round resort-type feel with Tonka Bay the site of the largest marina on Lake Minnetonka. Lake Minnetonka provides the community with a variety of year-round recreational fun, from boating, fishing, ice fishing, swimming, beaches, water sports as well as winter ice sports. In addition, Tonka Bay parks provide a variety of outdoor sports and recreation. The Southshore Community Center located in Shorewood also serves the Tonka Bay community with a variety of activities for all ages, including computer workshops, craft classes, games, fitness classes, and a TED Talk presentation series.
Tonka Bay is currently gearing up for the popular Arctic Fever winter festival! Along with the cities of Excelsior and Shorewood, Tonka Bay is co-hosting this annual three-day event on January 15-17th at Manitou Park. Festivities include a variety of winter fun: snow sculptures, sledding, skating, snowman building, snowshoeing, kids ice-fishing, bowling, bonfires, a chili feed, and a princess brunch. Other Tonka Bay events include the Arctic Fat Fever bike race which will take place on frozen Lake Minnetonka in February. The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce is an active part of life in Tonka Bay and for the surrounding communities. The Chamber puts on a variety of events that bring together the Lake side communities, such as Excelsior Art on the Lake, Lake Minnetonka 4th of July, as well as ski events, and runs.
