We are back with another city of the week! This time we are featuring Shakopee, which is located next to the Minnesota River, just 23 miles southwest of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Located right off of Highway 169, Shakopee is convenient for residents who wish to live and/or work in a suburban setting, with the ability to easily commute to and from Minneapolis/St. Paul. Shakopee is also easily accessible to visitors who wish to experience several notable travel destinations in the area. Shakopee is a beautiful area, with 920 acres of parks and open spaces, with a variety of indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, year-round sports opportunities, lake amenities, and nature areas.
Shakopee features several attractions for residents and visitors, including Valley Fair Amusement Park, the Canterbury Park Racetrack, and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, which opens for it’s 45th Season this Saturday, August 22nd! Additional destinations in Shakopee include The Landing, which is an 88-acre historical museum featuring area life from the 1840s-1890s; Sever’s Corn Maze and Fall Festival; the Wilkie Unit of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge; and the Stonebrooke Golf Club. Other nearby attractions include the Mystic Lake Casino, the Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area, and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
Throughout the year, Shakopee hosts a variety of community events, from summer entertainment in the parks, to holiday festivals. One of the biggest events is Shakopee Derby Days, which is Shakopee’s annual community festival. Shakopee Derby Days takes place the first weekend in August at Huber Park, and includes a 5K run, business expo, market fair, carnival, soapbox derby, parade, fireworks, as well as live music and entertainment.
