This week our city pick is Richfield, just south of Minneapolis, 5 miles downtown; and southwest of St. Paul, just west of the MSP International Airport. The close proximity to downtown areas as well as corporate headquarters makes for an easy commute. A first ring suburb of Minneapolis, Richfield residences are in close proximity to the airport and large business centers, but also popular green spaces which are located throughout the town. The Wood Lake Nature Center is one such space, featuring a variety of outdoor activities including cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and walking trails, opportunities for bird watching, as well as an environmental education program. Currently, it’s maple syruping season, and visitors can even help tap the trees this weekend.
Annual events and unique points of interest bring Richfield citizens together. Many of these events take place at Veteran’s Park, which is home to a large picnic pavilion, outdoor pool, mini golf, handicap accessible playground, walking paths, the Richfield indoor ice arena, and the Honoring All Veterans Memorial. Events include a weekly Farmer’s Market throughout the spring, summer and fall, the Urban Wildland Half Marathon and 5K, and the annual 4th of July Celebration. The Richfield 4th of July is the biggest annual event in Richfield, with three days of activities including a family night, car show, street dance, parade and fireworks. Richfield also has a popular Public Art Tour, of sculptures and murals placed around Richfield, ready for residents and visitors to explore.
