Today our pick of the week is the Eastern suburb of Oakdale, located about 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Residents of Oakdale enjoy the abundant shops and cafes, as well as the outdoor attractions including 28 parks, including the Oakdale Nature Preserve, with 220 acres of recreation area including a lake, trails, sport courts, a playground, and picnicking areas. The Discovery Center at the Oakdale Nature Preserve is a multi-purpose community entity that has an art gallery, aquarium, exhibits, reading spaces, and meeting/reception rooms, plus tandem bike rentals to use on the trails. Oakdale youth and adults can get involved in a variety of year-round sporting clubs, from skating to softball. The Oak Marsh Golf Course is a public course the offers instruction and classes, and also serves as a lovely event facility for wedding receptions, reunions, and other parties.
The big community event of the year starts today! The Oakdale Summerfest Celebration is a three-day festival held at Walton Park from June 23rd to June 25th. Events include a parade tonight, fireworks on Saturday, and live music every night; a carnival with rides, bingo and sports tournaments, boxing matches, a car show, kids events like a petting zoo, and the annual medallion hunt. Other yearly events include a Mystery Egg Hunt, weekly summer farmers markets, and Winter Wonderland during the holidays. The Discovery Center provides a variety of community activities throughout the year, including camps, classes, and special programs. During the summer months, the Oakdale community enjoys free concerts and movies at the Richard Walton Park.
