Today our city pick is Mound, MN, a suburb to the west of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Mound is located near several lakes, including Lake Minnetonka, and Dutch Lake, with Langdon Lake and the Lost Lake channel within Mound itself. Dakota Regional Trail runs through Mound around the lakes providing scenic recreation opportunities including hiking and biking. There are several swimming beaches, fishing piers, and boat launches in and near Mound for summer lake activities. In the winter, popular activities include cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing and skating. The City of Mound operates the Mound Docks and Commons Program, which means all Mound residents are able to apply for a public dock, regardless of whether they own lakefront property. Mound has a thriving business community, with local boutiques and shops, antique stores, as well as restaurants, bars, cafes and coffee shops. Plus, a fun fact about Mound is that Tonka Toys were originally created in Mound!
There are several annual community events that bring Mound citizens together. The largest of these events is the Spirit of the Lakes Festival and MN Wake Surf Competition in July. This year it will be held on Surfside Park and Beach on Lake Minnetonka, from July 15-16. Events throughout the festival include a grand parade, medallion hunt, craft beer festival, arts and crafts festival, a historic boat tour, as well as a variety of live music and entertainment for all ages. Other events in Mound include Our Lady of the Lake Incredible Festival, featuring carnival rides and games in September, and the Moonlight Trail Night, which is a winter walk on the Dakota Regional Trail lit by luminaries, with live music, a food truck and fire dancers. Moonlight Trail Night is this weekend, on Saturday March 5th.
