Elk River has a variety of attractions which lend to its small town feel near the big city, and is also on the Northstar Commuter Rail line, making it convenient to commute back and forth for work in the Twin Cities. Elk River has a lot of outdoor areas for sport and recreation. There are golf courses, a country club, several parks and green spaces, with sport courts and ball fields, and playgrounds. The park at Lake Orono also has swimming beaches and fishing piers, and residents can even canoe on Elk River. Other outdoor activities in Elk River include walking, biking, or cross-country skiing on the various trails, skating, sledding, and ice fishing. One area attraction is Oliver H. Kelley Farm, is a working 1860’s farm which is part of the Minnesota Historical Society sites. Visitors can see what farm life was like centuries ago, meet the animals, help work in the fields, and also walk on the various trails on the property. In addition to all of the outdoor places to visit, Elk River also has a lovely downtown area, with various shops, boutiques, antique stores and eateries along historic Main Street.
There are various community events that are held throughout the year, including Shiver Elk River, which is a city festival held in the winter.
