This week we are featuring Downtown, St. Paul, in honor of the annual Saint Paul Winter Carnival! Every year this local celebration is a highlight of winter for residents and visitors to the metro area. The Saint Paul Carnival brings the community together every winter, with a myriad of activities, from the normal winter sports like sledding, skiing and skating, to a huge treasure hunt (the person who finds the medallion wins $10,000!), beer tasting, a film festival, and more. Other annual Downtown events include the Irish Fair of Minnesota, held in August, and the Festival of Nations held the first weekend in May. As the largest free Irish fair in the US, this festival celebrates authentic Irish culture, with dance, costumes, tea rooms, sports, and live Irish music. The Festival of Nations is the celebration of over 100 ethnic groups to celebrate Minnesota’s diversity, with exhibits, performances, demonstrations, a marketplace, and international cafes.
St. Paul is located just east of Minneapolis, and Downtown St. Paul is located in the center, just north of the Mississippi River, and near the State Capitol. Many features of Downtown St. Paul are attractive to people who are looking for an urban place to live. There is a large variety of things to do and places to visit, including several museums, theaters, the Saint Paul RiverCentre convention center, the Xcel Center for events like Minnesota Wild hockey games, Rice park with summer bank concerts and ice skating in the winter, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. Downtown St. Paul is also right by the Mississippi River, so it’s easy for residents to hop on the bike trail or take advantage of the riverside docks as well as parks and green spaces. Bicyclers who want to make a day out of it can take the Gateway State Trail from Downtown St. Paul to Stillwater. Whether you like music and art, indoor or outdoor sports, recreation, museums or shopping, Downtown St. Paul has plenty to offer, making it a great place to live and visit.
