This week we are taking a look at a Western suburb, Delano Minnesota! This suburb is about 30 miles west of the downtown areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Delano has a rich history; it was incorporated in 1867 as a village, and has grown into a small town with a historic Downtown area, extensive park network, variety of community organizations, and spectacular school district. With a small town feel both within driving distance of rural areas, and the urban Twin Cities areas, residents love to call this western suburb ‘home’.
Delano is known for it’s 4th of July celebration! This year, festivities begin on the 1st of July and continue through July 4th. This annual celebration began in 1857, and is celebrating it’s 156th year as the oldest and largest 4th of July celebration in Minnesota! This year’s events include a laser light show, 5K race, bean bag tournament, baseball tournament, carnival, live music, and on the 4th, a grand parade with the 2016 Grand Marshall, Governor Dayton, and a thrilling fireworks display after dark. A variety of community events draw Delano residents together throughout the year, but especially in the summer. The city is looking forward to National Night Out, Taste of Delano, and Delano City Wide Garage Sale Days and Sidewalk Sales in August.
