Today our city pick of the week is Bloomington. This suburb is 10 miles south of downtown Minneapolis, and 15 miles southwest of downtown Saint Paul. Just south of the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, Bloomington is conveniently located near travel lines, and is a quick commute to Twin Cities businesses and attractions. Bloomington is famous for being home of the Mall of America, but that certainly is not this city’s only feature! Residents also enjoy the outdoors and take advantage of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, where trails run through the refuge, and opportunities for ice fishing and hunting can be found seasonally. In addition, Bloomington offers over 2,000 acres of public parks and playgrounds for year-round sports and recreation. The Bloomington Family Aquatic Center is open in the summer with a variety of pools, and the Bloomington Ice Garden has several indoor ice rinks including an Olympic-sized rink for year-round skating and hockey practice.
Community events that attract citizens include the Summer Fete to celebrate Independence Day, and the Winter Fete to beat the cold weather doldrums! The Winter Fete is currently going on in Bloomington, with several events coming up this weekend, including a history festival, ice harvest festival, ski jumping lessons, fat tire bike races, nature walks, as well as ski and snowshoe rentals. Other cultural activities can be found at the Bloomington Center for the Arts which has galleries and theaters for a variety of music, theater, ballet, and fine art events.
